FORT CARSON SOLDIER GETS 2 LIFE SENTENCES

Jomar Falu-Vives, 25, will spend the rest of his life in an American prison. CAMMMO.org brought you the story of Jomar’s trial back in July of this year with the Newsletter feature, Soldier’s Post Barred from Double Murder Trial. Jomar’s MySpace post read, “Reading is for the lame. Go shoot someone.” Jomar did just that- shot and killed two Colorado Springs residents while they staked a garage sale sign into a corner lot of the suburban residential area, not far from Fort Carson. For those who don’t remember or didn’t receive the July 2009 Newsletter, Jomar served in Iraq with Fort Carson’s extremely troubled 4th Brigade Combat Team that nicknamed itself the “Lethal Warriors.” The nickname could not have been more accurate, and the Colorado Springs community can attest. The number of felonies that this Brigades’ members have been convicted of back here at home continues to rise monthly. But the rest of the nation is largely unaware of this particular warning sign, and Fort Carson and the U.S. Army are doing everything they can to keep it quiet.

DESPITE ARMY’S EFFORTS, SOLDIER SUICIDES STILL RISING

There are certainly many ways to manipulate data. Rest assured that in the past few weeks, they have all been considered by Army Vice Chief of Staff Gen. Peter Chiarelli. But none of the few bright spots in the data seem to silence a couple of inarguable facts. First, all signs point to final U.S. Army suicide numbers in 2009 that will surpass 2008’s record setting numbers- which were the highest in three decades. Second, there is a very serious investigation in its infancy stages that involves efforts by the VA to cover-up and misreport Soldier suicides, keeping the already record-breaking reported numbers lower than the actual numbers should be. Not deterred, the U.S. Army is unveiling another program. This one will allow Soldiers to assess their mental well-being twice a year, much like the Army Physical Fitness Test measures their physical well-being. Chiarelli says, “It gives the same emphasis to psychological, emotional and mental strength that we have previously given to physical strength”.

INFANT TO STATE, MOM TO AFGHANISTAN

Specialist Alexis Hutchinson had plans for her infant son while she was deployed with the U.S. Army. Those plans were for her mother to watch her son, Kamani. Her mother had already given her blessing and commitment to this responsibility. Specialist Hutchinson put those plans in motion last month by flying with Kamani to California from Georgia, and returning to Georgia alone- Kamani left behind in California with Specialist Hutchinson’s mother. Specialist Hutchinson’s plans were to then deploy to Afghanistan. But after only a week with Specialist Hutchinson’s mother, Kamani became more than she could handle, in addition to her own special needs daughter and an ailing sister and mother of her own. Specialist Hutchinson’s mother has since brought Kamani back to Georgia. The Army gave Specialist Hutchinson an extension of time to find someone else to care for her son, but then changed their mind only days before her deployment. Refusing to deploy without first finding care for her son, Specialist Hutchinson sits confined at her Georgia base, while Kamani was sent by the U.S. Army to protective services. Does that seem like a broken system to you, too?
